Coach Positions


Chief of Race

  • Directs/ controls work of all race officials

  • Responsible for overall running of race

  • Summons meetings of Race Committee for all technical questions

  • Serves as Race Jury Member and holds deciding vote

  • Does not set the course

  • Grants provisional reruns

Referee

  • Represents all racers and coaches at jury meetings
  • Main area of reasonability is to check race course for safety and appropriateness for ability level of the racers. After this is accomplished the referee opens the course for inspection.  In the event the ref decides a change needs to be made he has the full authority to do so.  It is best to show the course setter what was changed and why.

  • Voting member of the jury

  • Grants provisional reruns

  • Posts the referee report on the score board with DQ’s as soon as race is complete.

  • Does not set the course.

Course Setter – Slalom

  • Distance from turning pole to outside pole should be 4-6 meters.

  • Minimum of 3 vertical combinations using hairpins and flushes.

  • Minimum distance between gates in combinations is .75 meters.

  • Vertical combinations (flushes or hairpins) turning pole to turning pole is 4-6 meters- use 6 meters, measure!!! Don’t guess, be consistent.

  • Vertical combinations can be set on flatter terrain to maintain speed, to indicate a terrain change or to direct the racer across the hill.

  • Open gates  (turning pole to turning pole) should be 10-14 meters (12 to 14m is recommended), max is 15 meters

  • Be consistent!!! If you start with 14m, stay with 14m.

  • Set your course rhythmically down the fall line.

  • Set the first gate straight down the fall line from the start, set your last gate to direct the racer to the center of the finish.

  • Offset is determined by the steepness of the hill.

Assistant Referee

  • Reasonable for all the referee duties should the ref not be able to perform them.

  • In WJR we do not have a Technical Delegate so the Asst Ref is a voting member of the jury

  • Grants provisional reruns
     

Course Setter-Giant Slalom

  • Turning pole to outside pole 4-8 meters, use 8 if you can

  • Set rhythmic course down the fall line with equal distance from turning poles.

  • Set turning pole to turning pole 18 to 24 meters (18 to 20 m is best for class 5/6) be consistent.

  • Set the first gate straight down the fall line from the start, set your last gate to direct the racer to the center of the finish.

  • Offset is determined by the steepness of the hill.

  • Set safe and be aware of fall zones.
